About Us

CAVRA is a lowland search and rescue unit specialising in Flood and Swiftwater rescue as well as recovery, operating within the Vale of Glamorgan and the City of Cardiff .Providing frontline assistance to the emergency services as well as HM Coastguard . Founded in 1998 at a time the floods looked to overwelm the emergency services.At present CAVRA have 30 members all volunteers highly trained in search and rescue as well as flood and swiftwater techniques and specialist skills needed in the field of rescue CAVRA is a voluntary search and rescue organisation,and a registered charity. Our purpose is to provide back-up personnel to the official Emergency Services in a range of situations, including in particular searches for missing persons, and support at public events , during times of adverse weather conditions, natural disaster or civil emergencyBased in Sully we train regularly throughout our area of operation, using a range of possible scenarios.Individual members are qualified in first aid, trained in using our own radio communications system, experienced in working as team members or leaders in searches in a variety of terrains, and in many cases have specialised skills, like working on steep ground or a medical background. Moreover, all the permanent members have undergone checks by the Criminal Records Bureau.While on a call-out or on duty, as well as on training sessions, members are recognisable by their overalls and marked protective clothing, and will also carry cards identifying them as members of the team

Land Search

CAVRA members recently recieved training from IFRA and can now provide a 10 man team trained as Land Search Technicians .Other members will shortly also undergo the same training

Equipped to Rescue boat standards Ongoing training of members to IFRA standards have also seen members rewarded with certification as Swiftwater First Responders with future plans to have more trained as Swiftwater Rescue Technicians by the start of 2012. With this members will also be trained in boat managment and crew

CAVRA have recently sent team members for instructors training in various aspects of Rescue techniques which now enables the team to carry out inhouse training to it's members to the standard required by government bodiesCAVRA will benefit by being able to save on costs normally borne either by the team members themselves or by using the valuable funds that they raise from various outdoor fundraising eventsCardiff and Vale Rescue Association was awarded significant funding by the Community Facilities and Activites ProgrammeNew equipment is now in operational use by our teams throughout Cardiff & the Vale of Glamorgan This new equipment has greatly improved our rescue capabilities and have enabled us to provide a rapid water rescue facility in Cardiff Bay
